Description: Malad Gorge State Park,
located just off of I-84 at exit 147, offers spectacular views of a 250 foot deep gorge cut into
the farm land that surrounds it. As you drive along the interstate through the rolling agricultural
land that stretches as far as the eye can see, there is little to give away the secrets of the
gorge that starts almost directly beneath the highway.
Malad Gorge was cut into the rock by the 12 mile long Malad River. Just beneath the interstate,
the river crashes down a series of waterfalls before flowing two and a half miles through the
gorge to the Snake River.
The best views of the river and falls can be had from the east end of the park. From the overlook
parking area a footbridge spans the gorge near the interstate offering viewers an overhead view
of the Devil's Washbowl - the large pool formed by the falls of the Malad River. A quarter mile
long paved path leads to an overlook for the falls.
Information regarding geologic formation and history of the area can be found on placards
located at the two large parking areas and along the road that parallels the gorge. A large
information display is located near the overlook parking area.
Although the hikes in the park are short, the spectacular views and its close proximity
to the interstate make it a worthwhile stop for any outdoor enthusiast who may be passing by.
Location: Malad Gorge State Park is
located a mile south of I-84 near at exit 147, near Tuttle, Idaho. From I-84 take exit 147 south.
Proceed to the first intersection and turn right into the park entrance. Once inside the park
follow the road right to reach the foot bridge, and left to drive along the gorge.
